#MobilePhotoNow: Two Art Worlds, One Hashtag

In the winter of 2015, the Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) co-curated an exhibition with the loose-knit mobile photography collective known as JJ Community. #MobilePhotoNow included images created in response to a series of prompts and shared on the photo sharing and social networking application Instagram®. The exhibition reflected a community-based curatorial practice (Keys & Ballengee-Morris, 2001) demonstrating new possibilities for participatory art and culture in the age of social media. This portrait of how the project came to be is presented as an example of how art world factions might be brought together, in both virtual and real spaces, through interactive technologies and practices

Art Education in My Backyard: Creative Placemaking on an Urban Farm

An art educator describes how she used her knowledge and experience of artistic and educational initiatives that forefront collective activity in real world settings to transform her backyard into an urban farm with the help of friends and neighbors. She combines an autoethnographic account of her experiences, including original photographs, with research on conceptual artists, participatory culture, and creative placemaking to position her work as participatory environmental art education. The paper is organized around the major steps one undertakes in planting a garden – siting, amending, seeding, tending, and harvesting - to draw parallels between the processes of maintaining a garden, and designing and implementing holistic art education. Urban farming is growing in cities around the world. The author believes art educators have a role to play as community leaders in such ventures

Intergenerational Narratives: The Personal is Professional

What began as a teacher-student relationship between educators Amy Brook Snider and Jodi Kushins has developed into a friendship and working partnership. At first, they did not consider their continuing long-distance connection as intergenerational. They shared experiences and exchanged ideas oblivious to the great difference in their ages. But as online tools, research, and communication emerged as a central focus of Jodi’s life and teaching, they became aware that this development might lead to an intergenerational digital divide between them. In order to explore their different responses to what has been called screen culture, they brought back their puppet alter egos for a presentation-cum-puppet show at the National Art Education Association conference in Chicago in 2016. This paper traces the history of the shifting relationship of two art educators, along with an extended excerpt from the script for their second puppet show

Pre-service Possibilities: Reconsidering \u27\u27Art for the Elementary Educator

Art for the Elementary Educator courses are sites of possibility in the field of art education, particularly art education oriented toward curriculum integration and meaningful art experiences. Drawing on literature about Art for the Elementary Educator courses and our own teaching experiences we make recommendations for reconsidering possible futures for this course as related to the future of art education. We believe that this course, its students, instructors, and course materials are worthy of sustained attention by the art education community. Ultimately, we argue that art education appreciation and advocacy, concepts we define in our concluding remarks, should be primary objectives for such classes. Reconsidering Art for the Elementary Educator in light of these ideas requires renewed examination of course content, student dispositions, instructor preparation, and teaching and learning resources
